The downside of rolling your own fediverse

I haven't actual-blogged in a while, but I wanted to drop a note here as a little timestamp of when I accidentally nuked my own fediverse instance, running over at microblog.atylerrobertson.com. It was using a fork of shuttlecraft and ran great until I started bumping up against Glitch's storage limits (after several months!). In an attempt to have it start auto-purging old posts to free up space, I accidentally had it delete any files that hadn't been touched in more than five minutes. This included — you guessed it — all of my account info, effectively killing my presence on the fediverse. And since I hadn't considered that possibility, I didn't even have a backup ready. C'est la vie!

I'm thinking about starting over with shuttlecraft, or maybe building something of my own, but frankly that just sounds like a lot of work. 😅 Maybe I'll try and spend some time finding an instance run by someone with more time and interest, or maybe I'll just drop the whole thing, I haven't decided yet.
